Sesamoiditis

The sesamoid bones are two small bones which sit under the big toe joint (1st metatarso-phalangeal joint) of each foot.  Their job is to increase the fulcrum for propulsion when you push off to take each step. When the sesamoids are injured or under a lot of strain, especially if people have a low-arched or high-arched foot type, they may fracture, become bruised (sesamoiditis), or sometimes break down (AVN or avascular necrosis).

It is normal for podiatrists at Foot Life to order x-rays to help in the diagnosis of this condition.

For many years podiatrists have prescribed orthotics (prescription foot supports) for children and adults with this problem.  In addition to orthotics, podiatrists at Foot Life normally give advice regarding “icing” of the injured area, and may advise the use of an “Air-cast” boot as an interim measure.
