Digital Video Gait Analysis is a technique used for many years by podiatrists to help assess the structure and function of the feet and legs. Typically, podiatrists will use a digital video camera to record a client walking or running, either outdoors, on a treadmill or sometimes indoors using a long corridor. There are pros and cons using any of these techniques, and the individual podiatrist may have a preference for one method over another.
Usually the camera is placed at floor level and video is recorded with the client running or walking toward the camera and away from the camera, and sometimes from the sides as well. Podiatrists at Foot Life will record from all these angles and replay the video in slow motion and freeze-frame so that the client can understand the cause of their problem. Along with the physical examination and non-weight bearing assessment, podiatrists use the video analysis to assess the amount of correction needed when prescribing orthotics.
