Foot Conditions & Treatments

The average person takes about 8,000 steps a day – a continual repetitive action and stress on the feet.

Some working people walk up to 24 kilometres in one day, and in a lifetime, the average person walks 128,000 kilometres, three times the circumference of the world!  With all that walking it’s no wonder that most people will experience foot pain during their lifetime.

At Footlife most of our treatments are around but not limited to the following areas:

When people suffer pain in their feet which doesn’t go away after 2 to 3 weeks, it is often caused by a combination of this continual repetitive action of the feet and a foot type with incorrect alignment and structure.  These bad foot types are usually either weak and unstable, or too stiff and rigid.  Sometimes a problem foot will even have a rearfoot (the back half of the foot) which is too rigid and a forefoot (the front half of the foot ) which is too unstable. With these painful feet the injured area has no chance of healing itself – stress upon stress.

Those suffering from foot, leg and back pain related to incorrect alignment of the feet often don’t know where to go when they are in trouble.  Recent research shows that these people will often buy arch supports, cushion insoles, expensive joggers or even “health” shoes to try to relieve their pain.  Many others will resort to anti-inflammatory medication, cortisone injections, or even surgery to ease their complaint.  Still others will visit physiotherapists, orthopaedic shoe-makers and orthotists, chiropractors or acupuncturists, before they ever think of visiting a podiatrist.

These alternatives usually offer a “quick fix” by helping to improve the cushioning or support of the feet, improving circulation and healing processes to the affected areas, or even by masking the pain.  This is fine in the short term, but because the underlying problem of incorrect foot alignment has not been looked at properly by a podiatrist, the foot structure will get worse, sometimes much worse, as time goes by.  A podiatrist looks at the root cause and how to prevent the problem in the first place. More and more these days, this is what people want and expect.

Over the last 25 years, Podiatrists have established themselves as the experts in the relief and prevention of foot, leg and back pain related to incorrect alignment of the feet.  Podiatrists complete a 4 year Bachelor of Applied Science degree and some also have a degree in Human Movements.  Podiatrists are allowed to use local anaesthetics, order x-rays and limited pathology tests, and some even do reconstructive surgery of the feet such as bunion surgery.

Podiatrists at Foot Life specialize in biomechanical care and orthotics (Prescription Foot Supports), which ease and correct foot postural problems.

Foot Life has cared for over 100,000 clients since 1979 and uses the latest technology in digital video gait analysis and computerized orthotics.

Following a physical examination which checks vascular and neuromuscular function, podiatrists at Foot Life complete a digital video gait analysis. Orthotics are then constructed using a plaster cast of the foot in its ideal position – called the “neutral sub-talar position”.  These casts are then sent to an off-site lab and scanned with a Laser.  The podiatrists’ corrections are then added to the scanned image to enhance the client’s foot biomechanics and a computerized milling machine mills the orthotics to their exact specifications.

Foot Life can make orthotics from hard or soft materials, and in three-quarter or full-length insoles.  Orthotics can also be worn easily in open-back sandals using a Velcro clip. Just like eyeglasses and dentures, orthotics need to be re-made from scratch every 3 to 4 years (children more frequently).  This is because our feet and gait change significantly over time.
